In summary we have found that there is indeed a wide range of misconceptions about lightning. Many people have a general idea, but most were unable to clearly state how lightning is formed or where it comes from. Some people even found it hard to formulate their idea of what lightning is. It was obvious that they hadn't thought about where lightning was made, so they made up a version that sounded the most plausible at that moment.
While many of the people were incorrect, most of them thought the information they were sharing was correct. It is this misinformation that causes misconceptions. It was quite surprising that there was such a wide range of answers; from explaining what lightning is to the possibility of an object being struck by lightning.
Another aspect we found interesting was when asked, "tell me everything you know about lightning" many people responded with "nothing". It was not until we inquired further, that they realized they do know something. Whether or not that something was correct was what we were getting at.
Although many of the misconceptions were similar, the variety and explanations were baffling at times.
